Kittson Healthcare is Participating in the Rural Hospital Stabilization Program

Kittson Healthcare is participating in the Rural Hospital Stabilization Program. This nationwide federal initiative provides no-cost technical assistance to rural hospitals to improve financial stability and expand services that meet community needs.

Kittson Healthcare applied last fall and began receiving hands-on assistance in February. Through the program, KH will receive financial and operational assessments to guide plans for expanding or introducing service lines and keeping care local in Hallock, MN. The program also provides funding for operational and equipment costs related to these efforts.

I am very excited for Kittson Healthcare to participate in the Rural Hospital Stabilization Program. Rural hospitals, nationally but also locally, are facing significant challenges. Maintaining access to high-quality local healthcare is critically important to the strength and well-being of our community. We truly hope this opportunity provides us with reliable information and meaningful data to support thoughtful, informed decisions that will guide the future of Kittson Healthcare and ensure we can continue to serve our community for years to come, says Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Swenson, on what it means to be selected as a participant.

Eight hospitals nationwide were selected for this year’s cohort, allowing organizations to collaborate, share experiences, and strengthen their networks.

As part of the program, Kittson Healthcare also received funding for a Community Engagement Champion position. This role has been filled and will focus on community relationships, outreach, and marketing of services, along with sharing the hospital’s local impact.

The Rural Hospital Stabilization Program is funded by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, a division of the Health Resources and Services Administration, with services and technical assistance provided by the National Rural Health Resource Center. What this means for our community is simple:

More opportunity to strengthen and protect local healthcare right here in Kittson County. Participation in the Rural Hospital Stabilization Program gives Kittson Healthcare access to expert guidance, funding support, and real data to help identify which services our community needs most and how to sustain them for the future. For local families, that means a stronger path toward keeping care close to home, reducing the need to travel for services, and building a more stable healthcare system for the next generation. In a rural area like ours, opportunities like this are important—not just for the hospital, but for the health, confidence, and long-term well-being of the entire community.
