Early Detection Saves Lives: Breast Cancer Awareness in Our Community

Each October, we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness of a disease that affects thousands of women—and men—every year. But here in rural Kittson County, awareness alone isn’t enough: we must ensure access, encourage early detection, and support our neighbors in getting care close to home.

Why Early Detection Matters

  • When breast cancer is caught while still localized (before it spreads), the five-year survival rate in Minnesota is about 99 %

  • In 2022 in Minnesota, the age-adjusted incidence rate for breast cancer was approximately 52.3 new cases per 100,000 females under 50 and 388.4 per 100,000 for older women

  • Yet, in rural areas, screening rates lag behind urban counterparts. For example, among rural farm women in Minnesota, a study found that while 78 % had ever had a mammogram, only 49 % had one in the past year.

These statistics remind us: getting screened early is critical—and doing so locally can reduce barriers.

Local Challenges & The Rural Gap
Many women in our area must travel 60+ miles to larger medical centers for mammograms or women’s health specialists. That distance—plus time, cost, and logistics—can deter regular screening.

This is where Kittson Healthcare aims to make a difference: by bringing care closer, offering support, and reducing barriers.

What Kittson Healthcare Offers (or Plans to Offer)
We believe women in Kittson County should not have to leave their community for essential screening and care. Here’s how we’re working toward that:

  • On-site women’s health services & physician consultation: Our local providers can guide breast health, risk assessment, and follow-up.

  • On-site mammography services. Schedule a screening in Hallock available bi-weekly or Karlstad locations on a monthly basis..

  • Support for patients needing referrals when advanced imaging or specialized services are necessary.

  • Patient education & reminder systems to encourage women to stay up to date on screening.

Inspiring Real Stories
Let’s share a few stories (with names changed) of early detection making all the difference:

  • Jane, age 55, had felt a slight lump but delayed care due to distance. With local encouragement and access, she had a mammogram through a partner facility. The cancer was caught early and she underwent successful treatment. She now volunteers to remind others to stay current with screening.

  • Mary, age 48, had no family history and felt healthy. Her annual exam included a screening recommendation by her clinic provider. Because of that, a small abnormality was found—and treated early—giving her peace of mind.

These are the kinds of stories we want in Kittson County: people whose lives were changed because they had access, encouragement, and early action—right in their own community.

What You Can Do This Month & Beyond

  1. Schedule your screening if you are age 40 or older (or earlier if your provider recommends).

  2. Talk to your provider about breast cancer risks, family history, and what frequency is right for you.

  3. Encourage loved ones—mothers, sisters, daughters, friends—to get screened.

  4. Spread awareness: share this post, wear pink, host conversations.

Final Thought
Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate by zip code. But where we live should not determine whether we survive. By promoting early detection, supporting local access, and linking community and care, Kittson Healthcare is committed to making a difference in every woman’s health journey.

Together, let’s use this Breast Cancer Awareness Month to turn awareness into action—and keep our neighbors healthy, safe, and cared for.
